About Tang Yuen-ha

Ms. Tang Yuen-ha is the founder and artistic director of Jingkun Theatre. Well-versed in Eastern and Western acts and culture from an early age, Tang has a slew of awards to her name, attesting not only to the strength of her bicultural training but also the mentorship of a number of Xiqu maestros. She founded Jingkun Theatre in 1986, dedicating herself to the performance and production of Jingju and Kunqu while actively promoting traditional Chinese theatrical arts in Hong Kong and abroad.

Over the years, Jingkun Theatre has produced various kinds of performances, talks, workshops and courses. Recent major productions include The Exquisite Charm of Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, Classics Revisited, The Northern & Southern Kunqu Virtuosi Showcase etc. Jingkun Theatre was invited to represent Hong Kong in the China Peking Opera Festival held in Nanjing in 2001, and the China Kunqu Opera Festival held in Suzhou in 2006. In 2007, it was invited to represent Hong Kong in the 3rd Festival of Traditional Chinese Opera in Paris, and won the Prix Special du Jury (Special Jury Prize) and the Best Actor Award with its performance The House Wulong.

In recognition of her great achievement in Jingqu and Kunqu and the contribution to the arts development in Hong Kong, Ms Tang Yuen-ha received the award of "Best Artist of the Year" presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2008 and was conferred the "Medal of Honour" by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2010.

On the education front, Ms. Tang Yuen-ha is dedicated to promoting Xiqu with the objective of fostering understanding of Chinese culture among the younger generation through the arts of Jingju and Kunqu. Recently she co-organised a Jingju and Kunqu training programme with the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, which concluded with a students’ performance at the end of 2012.
